A Note From Amy, Founder and CEO...

Choosing a hybrid publisher is a big decision—and I don’t take it lightly.

As a mom of eight, playing “calendar Tetris” is a normal part of my life—which is why I asked my NYT bestselling author-turned-publisher for a project timeline when I was in the process of writing my first memoir. She refused, expecting me to jump on last-minute calls with her and respond at warp speed to her every email. Her demands escalated to the point of feeling intrusive—all for services I had paid for. The more I pushed for a timeline so we could synchronize our calendars, the more incensed she became. It was as if my desire to get some project organization was a direct insult to her ego. Eventually, it became painfully clear I was just another number to her—a paycheck, a contractual obligation. I still have her condescending and threatening emails saved in a folder, and they motivate me to be the publisher she wasn’t: mutually respectful, collaborative, and empathetic.

Publishing a passion project requires great personal sacrifice. It draws on your hard-earned life experience. It asks you to dig deep, to expose freshly closed wounds, and to share your most costly lessons at a soul level. Writers becoming published authors need support, and they need a publisher who believes in and is committed to their vision—through a combination of guidance and expertise, paired with the commitment to uphold the unveiling of the book that rings true to their experience.

One of the best tools I’ve learned in recovery is the ability to flip the script and turn unfortunate sagas into superpowers—reframing difficulties so they become determination and turning failure into fuel. That first lackluster experience with the “princess publisher” also became a reframing opportunity. A year after my first memoir came out, published by Voldemort, I republished my book under my own imprint, and everything with her name and company on it was jettisoned from my book. It was an incredibly empowering experience, and that’s when I decided to earn a postgraduate degree in publishing. I realized I could start a bespoke publishing company where I bring people’s passion projects to life. And I could choose like-minded contractors to work with who understand the importance of the A-Team Press vision: to preserve and uphold authors’ rights, royalties, voice, and creative direction… with kindness and love.

I’ve had a lot of experience turning messes into meaningful messages, and I’ve cultivated the post-grad formal education nuanced skill set to match.

Now it’s my privilege and honor to help bring meaningful, mission-driven books to life and assist writers becoming authors in their quest to share their message with the world—through the creation and publication of a professional book that reflects their story authentically.

It is SO fulfilling.
